A content management system (CMS) is a software application or set of related programs used to create and manage digital content. CMSs are typically used for enterprise content management (ECM) and web content management (WCM).
ECM typically refers to the software and processes used to store, control, version, route, track, archive documents and other types of digital content. WCM refers to the software and processes used to manage to create, publish, and deliver digital content on websites.
While there is some overlap between ECM and WCM functionality, they are generally considered to be two distinct categories of software. In general, ECM solutions are better suited for managing large volumes of unstructured content, while WCM solutions are better suited for managing smaller volumes of structured content.
Some popular CMSs include WordPress, Drupal, Joomla!, and Magnolia.
